Editor: A tough job but it was vital we honoured the best of our club

Happy New Year to you all. I hope 2017 will be a prosperous one to everyone associated with our wonderful football club. I really hope you enjoy this extraordinary issue. An edition to help you reminisce and, more than likely, to spark a debate.

Who is the greatest Hammer of all time? Is it Moore? Bonds? Or maybe Sir Trev? And who would make your top 10? It’s not easy is it?! I hope you enjoy reading our top 40 West Ham players of all time.

My thanks to the following for casting votes to help reach this top 40: Legendary club photographer Steve Bacon, Iain Dale, from West Ham till I die, our brilliant photographer Nicky Hayes, Graham Howlett, from KUMB, and West Ham World’s James Jones. Thanks also to Hammers historian John Northcutt, our managing editor Simon Osborn, Hugh Southon, from Claret and Hugh, Brian Williams, author of Nearly Reach the Sky, and our social media editor Lucy Woolford.

I don’t wish to give too much away on page three but there are more than a few players who I feel are far higher than I’d thought they’d be. Equally there are others who I felt were guaranteed a place in the top half but find themselves towards the start of our feature.

As always, we’d love your feedback on our top 40. Who have we missed out? Who do you think should be higher in our list? Or lower? Who’d make your top 10? Maybe we could make this an annual feature. ‘The 40 worst players’ next year, anyone?
